How can I get rid of ground wasps without pesticides?

— Cardie Molina

Cardie,

Thanks for asking and we have a very unique response, penned by our gardening expert, Barbara Pleasant. Barbara has been using this old-fashioned method for years and it works!

First locate the hole in the ground where the nest is. Then, get a clear plastic or glass cake cover — yup, a cake cover — and keep reading here.

I just leave them alone, they have their place in nature. If you are nervous and afraid, well try to stand still, watch them, they are quite interesting. In fall when there are many, they want to drink water and eat some fruit and jam and insects. They don't sting as long as you are quiet and watch that they are not on your food, ingesting them is dangerous. Wasp don't want to harm you, they are just looking for food.
They drink from the hummingbird feeders and buzz around, so why do you want to get rid of them?
It is the same with many garden insects and creatures, the more you watch the more interesting they get.
Hope I don't scare you but try it. I have never been stung by a bee or wasp.

Thank you, thank you! I have been looking for something like that for ages to get rid of the yellow jacket nest in my herb garden! I will try this.

A tour guide in South Carolina told me last year that wasps/bees/hornets equate blue with the sky, and therefore won't build nests on surfaces painted that color. Don't know if it's true, but it sounds good.

Wasps will not build under eves or porch ceilings painted blue it works but i don't know why.
